Loss of Mary D. Sheriff

I found out today about the loss of a woman I consider my friend, mentor and advisor, Professor Mary D. Sheriff. She was Chair of the Art Department while I was getting my PhD at UNC Chapel Hill, which I completed in 2005. She always supported and encouraged my work and was a strong advocate. We kept in touch, and I saw her for a lunch date about 3 years ago. I found about her illness and hospice care only 3 days ago. From what I have read, she was working on a book in her last few days, as furiously as possible. I believe she finished it, then went to sleep. A very short film of her saying her “last words” was posted online today, and it featured her telling her students how much she loved them. I feel a great loss.
